Overcoming Adversity – Shelly Fullwood

Shelly has been around CFIO for longer than you may realize. She participated in our very first New You Challenge. After a few months off Shelly came back and did Personal Training with the goal of preparing for group CrossFit classes. Her progress from Day 1, way back when, is inspiring!

A few months into group classes, she took a nasty spill on a box jump that resulted in a bone contusion in her right elbow. The doctor ordered her to stay away from movements that involved anything over 2 pounds.

Most people would have called us to put their membership on hold or even canceled, but Shelly continued to come into group classes and trusted the coaches to modify movements to accommodate her injury. Shelly is a trooper and we appreciate her trusting us with her fitness. She has found true community here and has even roped her daughter, Hannah, into joining with her and both of them are continuing to see amazing results!

We asked her a few questions about why she continues to choose CFIO:

How has CrossFit Inside Out changed your lifestyle?

The biggest lifestyle change that has happened to me is that I now plan my week around CrossFit classes.

What was your first impression of CFIO?

My first impression was am I too old to do this, can I keep up? With that question, I have to say that the coaches really encourage me, that I could do regular CrossFit classes.

What’s been the biggest change you’ve seen since starting CrossFit Inside Out?

The biggest change that I have seen, was actually this week, we had a 400 meter run as part of the warm-up and I didn’t have to stop and I wasn’t the last one to finish; a huge accomplishment for me since running has become much more difficult activity with having bad knees and worsening asthma. I have also gotten stronger, and my endurance in everyday life activities has increased.

What are you working on right now?

The biggest thing I am working on right now is trying to regain strength back into my right arm, not being able to use it at all for 4 months, because of a torn ligament and an intense bone contusion in my elbow, has been a challenge. All of the coaches and members have been so great during my recovery. They all cheered me on, even when everyone had to do burpees and I was just doing air squats. But my ultimate goal is to do a rope climb and a muscle up, I know those are big goals, but I have always been quite competitive especially with myself.

What’s your favorite CFIO memory?

I actually have two favorite CFIO memories. The first was actually when my daughter came and worked out with me several months ago (before my injury) to see what Crossfit was all about, the next day she told her Dad and sisters I couldn’t keep up with Mom; she joined the next week. My second favorite memory was last week, It was the first time since my injury that I was able to complete a regular Metcon without any adjustments, of course, I did have to scale it.
