No Meat Athlete – Rob Brink

Rob has been a member of CFIO for some time now. He has participated in 2 CrossFit Opens and 2 Summer Games and it arguably one of the best athletes in the building.

More than his athletic ability, we love his personality and kindness. You will be hardpressed to find a nicer, more encouraging person. We are so grateful to have Rob as a member at CFIO!

Rob has changed his lifestyle completely around to become healthier and fitter than ever!

We asked him a few questions about why he continues to choose CFIO:

How has CrossFit Inside Out changed your lifestyle?

It’s changed my mindset of having to workout to actually wanting to workout. I now find myself trying to find more ways to introduce CrossFit movements into my everyday life. I think almost every time Alyssa and I go to the beach we are either trying to do handstand walks or pistols.

What was your first impression of CFIO?

Alyssa and I had just moved down to Wilmington from Wisconsin and we previously worked out at an Anytime Fitness. We weren’t the biggest fans of traditional gyms where you’re just another member. We were looking to try something new. When we came across CFIO on Groupon and decided to give it a try. Nick and Andrea were very welcoming and threw us right into a workout that involved thrusters and rowing. I think I was partners with Coach Brandon and Greg Pampell at the time. It was a tough workout but they pushed me and made sure I was doing everything correctly. It was such a great experience I was hooked.

What’s been the biggest change you’ve seen since starting CrossFit Inside Out?

The biggest change I’ve seen since starting CrossFit Inside Out would have to be getting back to being fit. I was first introduced to CrossFit while I was wrestling in college. At the time I was very active and fit. My Strength & Conditioning coach would sometimes grab a workout from CrossFit.com and have us do it at practice. I really enjoyed the workouts and did really well but never gave it a second thought.
After getting mentally and physically burned out from wrestling almost year round and constantly cutting weight for the past 6 years, I made the decision to give up wrestling. Slowly over time I began to stop working out and wasn’t thinking about what I put into my body. I went from wrestling at 133lbs to weighing around 176lbs. Since starting CFIO I’ve been working out 4-5 days a week, switched to a plant based diet and am back to being fit again. Not only do I feel great, but I’m faster, stronger and overall more fit than I was when I was wrestling in college.

What are you working on right now?

Currently Im working on preparing for the Reignited Games this weekend with my teammates Will Odom and Nick White. The past month I’ve been coming to the box every Thursday Morning at 7:30am to run through the workouts, work on form, and strategize for the workouts. Im also planning to do the CrossFit Team Series this year with Alyssa. Other than that I would like to work on Wallballs and Overhead Squats. Both are two of my biggest weaknesses.

What’s your favorite CFIO memory?

My favorite CFIO memory would have to be when I was selected to be a team captain for the CrossFit Open. I drafted an amazing group of people (WOD Squad) that went above and beyond each week in both the workouts and the team spirit. I think we had one of these best intros of all time when we made everyone wait for us to light off fireworks and came in dressed as 80’s wrestling stars. I even managed to fit into my high school wrestling singlet. We ended up with a strong 2nd place finish and the whole 5 weeks was a blast!
